Tree service questions, answered
Straight answers about tree trimming and removal costs, palm trees, stump grinding, emergencies and permits from FR Tree Service, serving Fontana and the Inland Empire. Updated October 2026.
How much does tree trimming cost in Fontana?
Tree trimming from FR Tree Service starts at $300, and every job gets a free quote before work begins. The final price depends on the tree's size and height, how much needs to come off, how easy it is to reach, and how much debris there is to chip and haul.
How much does tree removal cost in the Inland Empire?
Tree removal from FR Tree Service starts at $500. Large trees, trees next to houses or power lines, and trees that have to come down in sections cost more because they take more climbing, rigging and time. Stump grinding can be added to the same visit.
Do you give free tree service estimates?

What affects the price of tree work?
The biggest price drivers are the tree's height and trunk size, the species, how close it is to houses, fences or wires, whether a climber is needed or equipment can reach it, and how much wood and brush has to be hauled away.
How often should trees be trimmed?
As a general guide, most shade and street trees benefit from trimming every two to three years, young trees more often while they're being shaped, and fast-growing trees or trees near roofs and wires once a year. Palms usually need dead fronds removed every year.
What's the best time of year to trim trees in Southern California?
Many trees are best pruned in late fall and winter when they're dormant, and it's smart to thin heavy canopies before Santa Ana wind season. Dead, broken or hanging branches should come off right away, whatever the season.
What is the difference between tree trimming, thinning and pruning?
Trimming usually means shaping a tree and cutting it back for looks and clearance. Thinning removes selected branches throughout the canopy so light and wind pass through. Pruning is the careful removal of dead, weak, diseased or crossing limbs for the tree's health and structure.
When should a tree be removed instead of trimmed?
Removal is usually the right call when a tree is dead or dying, badly damaged, leaning toward a structure, has major trunk decay or cracks, or has roots that are lifting foundations or pipes. We'll tell you honestly if trimming will do the job instead.
Can you remove a tree in a small backyard?
Yes. FR Tree Service removes trees in tight spaces by climbing the tree and taking it down in sections, lowering the pieces carefully so nothing hits the house, fence or neighbors.
Do you clean up after the job?
Yes. FR Tree Service crews chip branches on site with a commercial chipper and load the wood and debris into our truck, so your yard is left clean.
Is it safe to trim a tree near power lines myself?
No. Stay at least 10 feet away from overhead lines and never trim near them yourself. Branches touching the main lines are handled by the utility (Southern California Edison in most of the Inland Empire), so call them first, then call us for the rest of the tree.
How much does palm tree trimming cost?
Palm trimming prices depend on the palm's height, the type of palm, how many fronds and seed pods need to come off, and whether the trunk is being skinned. FR Tree Service gives a free quote for every palm job. Call (909) 684-6220.
What is palm tree skinning?
Skinning removes the old frond bases (the "boots") from a palm trunk to leave a clean, smooth trunk. It improves the look of the palm and removes a place for pests and debris to collect.
How often should palm trees be trimmed?
Most palms in Southern California need dead fronds and seed pods removed about once a year. Avoid over-trimming: cutting off healthy green fronds weakens the palm.
Do you trim tall palm trees?
Yes. FR Tree Service has climbers who trim and skin tall palms, and a ground crew that chips the fronds and cleans up.
How much does stump grinding cost?
Stump grinding prices depend on the stump's diameter, the number of stumps, root spread and how easy it is to get the grinder to it. FR Tree Service can grind stumps on the same visit as a removal, and every job gets a free quote.
How deep do you grind a stump?
Stumps are ground below the surface so the area can be covered with soil, sod or pavers. Tell us what you plan to put there, and we'll grind to suit it.
Should I grind a stump or remove it completely?
For most yards, grinding is faster, cheaper and less disruptive than digging out the whole root ball, and it leaves the ground ready for new landscaping.
Do you offer 24/7 emergency tree service?
Yes. FR Tree Service takes emergency calls 24/7 for fallen trees, broken limbs and trees on houses, cars, fences or driveways. Call (909) 684-6220.
What should I do if a tree falls on my house?
Get everyone out of the damaged area, stay away from any downed power lines and call 911 if lines are down or anyone is hurt. Then call (909) 684-6220. Take photos for your insurance before cleanup starts, if it's safe to do so.
Who is responsible for a tree on the property line in California?
Under California Civil Code sections 833 and 834, a tree whose trunk stands wholly on one property belongs to that owner, and a tree whose trunk stands on the line belongs to both neighbors in common. This is general information, not legal advice.
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Fontana?
It depends on the city and the tree. Some Inland Empire cities regulate removing certain trees, heritage trees or street and parkway trees, and HOAs often have their own rules. Check with your city and HOA before removing a large tree, and ask us during your quote.
