What is the difference between tree trimming, thinning and pruning?
Trimming usually means shaping a tree and cutting it back for looks and clearance. Thinning removes selected branches throughout the canopy so light and wind pass through. Pruning is the careful removal of dead, weak, diseased or crossing limbs for the tree's health and structure.
How often should trees be trimmed?
As a general guide, most shade and street trees benefit from trimming every two to three years, young trees more often while they're being shaped, and fast-growing trees or trees near roofs and wires once a year. Palms usually need dead fronds removed every year.
Is it safe to trim a tree near power lines myself?
No. Stay at least 10 feet away from overhead lines and never trim near them yourself. Branches touching the main lines are handled by the utility (Southern California Edison in most of the Inland Empire), so call them first, then call us for the rest of the tree.
